Trip duration limits and cover for longer trips

Trip duration limits

The maximum duration of cover for Platinum and Business card types is 35 days (round trip) and for World card types is 120 days (round trip).

You must hold a return travel ticket for your journey before you depart New Zealand that shows a return date within the standard trip limit for your card type.

If you are traveling for longer than the standard limit you have no automatic cover under the policy for any part of your trip.

Cover for Longer trips

If your trip is longer than the maximum trip duration applicable to your card type then provided your trip is no longer than 180 days, you can purchase cover your trip.

Complete an eligibility questionnaire to apply to cover your longer duration trip.

If we offer you cover over your trip and you pay the required premium, you will have the same level of cover (refer to the Schedule of Benefits) available to you for shorter trips.

Standard policy terms and conditions apply including the requirement you hold a return ticket to New Zealand at the time you apply for cover over a longer trip.

For cardholders 75 years and over the premium required to purchase cover for longer trips is built into the Mature Age premium, and a separate premium will not show for the extended duration, however the covered dates of your trip will show on your Certificate of Insurance.

Trip duration extension cover must always be purchased prior to your departure from New Zealand.

If your plans change while you are overseas and you want to travel for a period longer than you have arranged cover for (up to a maximum of 180 days) you must call Travel Guard prior to the date your cover expires on +64 9 359 1624 and apply for extended duration cover.

If you are unable to return to New Zealand on your planned return date due to a trip interruption or a medical event you should call Travel Guard on +64 9 359 1624 to check whether the automatic extension of cover available under your policy applies to your circumstances.
