Overseas Travel Insurance: Change of Underwriter.

From 1 November 2026 the insurance included with your card(s) will be underwritten by Zurich Australian Insurance Limited, incorporated in Australia, ACN 000 296 640, trading as Zurich New Zealand (‘Zurich New Zealand’), instead of AIG Insurance New Zealand Limited (“AIG").

For more information about Zurich New Zealand, including their financial strength rating, overseas policy holder preference and privacy statement, please visit www.zurich.co.nz.

Zurich New Zealand engages other entities including Travel Guard companies within the Zurich Insurance Group to provide services in support of this insurance.

Extended Warranty and Purchase Protection: Policy Cancellation

From 11.59pm on 30 November 2026 Extended Warranty and Purchase Protection cover will no longer be available.

If you've already purchased an item that's covered before this date, your existing cover will continue under the previous policy terms and AIG will still handle any claims.

What are the changes to overseas travel insurance cover?

Policy Wordings

Policy wordings have been rewritten in full to make the content easier to read and understand what is and isn't covered.  Updated policy wordings will be available from mid October. Changes include:

  • Reducing the number of different policy wordings from four to two. All eligible Platinum and Business cards are covered in the same policy document, and all World cards are covered in the same policy document.

  • Combining related parts of the policy into the same sections

  • Using plain English

Policy schedule changes

Some policy benefits are changing, including;

  • The policy excess (where applicable) is changing from $200 to $300.

  • The amount you are required to pay towards your or your Family’s Pre-Paid Deposits using your card will be fixed at $500, regardless of where you are travelling.*

  • The maximum amount payable for overseas rental vehicle excess claims is increasing from $5000 to $8,000 per covered trip.

  • The maximum amount payable for funeral expenses is changing from $12,500 per person or $20,000 per family to $30,000 per person

Because the policies have been rewritten entirely, once the new policy documents are available, it is important to read the policy wording in full to understand how the new policy wordings might affect you, and your individual requirements.

*Excluding Airpoints World card, for non-business travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I am travelling or have already activated cover before 1 November 2026?

Zurich New Zealand will be responsible for claims that occur on or after 1 November 2026 under the new policy terms and conditions, regardless of when your trip started or when you activated cover.

If a claim event occurs on or before 31 October 2026, AIG will be responsible for your claim, even if your trip continues after that date.

If you’re travelling on a covered trip on or after 1 November 2026 or if you have activated cover before 1 November 2026 for an upcoming trip, then Zurich New Zealand will provide continuity of coverage for that trip on terms that are no less favourable than the AIG travel insurance policy. This includes applying the old policy excess to any claim, made on or after 1 November 2026.

When will new policy wordings be released?

New policy wordings will be available in mid-October. These changes will apply to new and existing customers. Westpac will send a communication about the changes to existing card holders.

Are there changes to terms, conditions and exclusions?

Overseas travel insurance policies have been rewritten to make sure that they are clear and easy to understand. Some examples of what this means are:

  • Policy Benefits: Benefits have been rewritten to clearly state what is covered, what isn’t covered, and what we will pay when there is a covered claim. We have also moved different sections together if they deal with similar events. For instance, cancellation and additional travel expenses are now combined as they both relate to changes to your planned itinerary. Some benefits have changed – see ‘what are the changes to overseas travel insurance cover’ at the top of this page.

  • Policy definitions: some definitions, such as pre-existing medical condition(s), have been changed, and others have been added or deleted. This is to make sure the rewritten policy benefits work as expected.

  • Exclusions. Some exclusions have been changed, and others have been added or deleted, or moved into specific sections that they apply to. You should always review policy exclusions, even if you think the changes may not affect you.

What is staying the same?

Some important features of the policy that aren’t changing are below. Even if these aren’t changing, it’s always important to read the policy in full before you travel, to make sure it meets your requirements.

  • Overseas travel only. You can only be covered for international trips departing from and returning to New Zealand.

  • Age limits: If you are aged between 75 and 90 when travelling you will have restricted cover under this policy and if you are aged 91 when travelling you will have no cover. View the Age Limits and Mature Age Medical Cover page for more details and information on how to apply for and purchase Mature Age Cover

  • Trip duration limits. You are not covered for any part of your trip if it is over 35 days duration (Platinum Mastercards), or 120 days (World Mastercards), or you have purchased a duration extension.

  • Pre-existing medical conditions remain excluded, unless you have applied to cover them, and paid any applicable premium.

  • Other important exclusions, such as war, not having correct visa’s to travel, or providers like airlines going into bankruptcy or financial default do remain in the policy, even if they have been reworded to make it easier to understand how they apply.

If I have already activated cover for an upcoming trip, do I need to do anything?

No. If you have already activated cover for an upcoming trip, you do not need to do anything, regardless of when you are travelling.

Do I need to reapply for optional cover such as pre-existing medical conditions cover?

No, if you have arranged any optional cover, and paid the required premium to AIG then you do not need to do anything. Your cover will remain in place with no change needed.

Can I apply for cover, if I am travelling after 1 November 2026?

Yes, you can confirm your trip is covered now, even if you are travelling after 1 November 2026, and add any required optional extensions such as pre-existing medical condition cover. Just enter your trip details on our Questionnaire.

Are there changes to contact details?

Yes, some contact details will change from 1 November 2026.

I have an AIG confirmation of cover certificate, do I need to do anything?
